THE MIKADO

The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operas!

Nanki-Poo, the son of The Mikado, disguises himself as a wandering musician in order to avoid marriage from the elderly Katisha. In the town of Titpu, he falls in love with the beautiful Yum-Yum, but the two are prevented from marrying by Ko-Ko, Yum-Yum’s guardian and Lord High Executioner. Further chaos ensues as The Mikado who, struck by the fact that no one has been beheaded in Titipu for a year, threatens to abolish the office of Lord High Executioner unless somebody is executed within a month. In this comic opera, Gilbert and Sullivan poke fun at British culture and satirize the Victorian obession with the Orient.

H.M.S PINAFORE

 

H.M.S Pinafore is a comic operetta by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert and serves as one of their most noteworthy works. It ran for 571 performances at the Opera Comique in London in 1878, making it the second longest run of any musical theatre piece at the time.

 

 

 

 

Aboard the British Ship, H.M.S Pinafore, a story of love and equality unfolds as the ship’s captain’s daughter, Josephine, falls in love with lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw.. The captain insists that Josephine be wedded to Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. However, Sir Joseph ‘s advocacy for the equality of humankind inspires Josephine and Ralph to overturn the expected social order once in for all.
